Hero Spotlight: Daniel Nottling

Introduce yourself (&Family). Where do you work and what do you do there?

My name is Dan Nottling.  I am a Lieutenant/Paramedic with the City of Waukesha (WI).  I have been a firefighter for 23 years and have been with the City of Waukesha for 17 years.  I am married to my amazing wife, Liz and combined with have three kids - ages 15, 13, and 9.

What inspired you to work as a firefighter?

Growing up, I knew I was one to be a servant leader. My brother has cerebral palsy, which has not slowed him down at all, however it has been a long road for him to get to where he is.  Growing up, I learned about helping others through helping him.  He truly made me love giving back, helping, and doing whatever you can for others.  Firefighting seemed like the perfect fit for me.  The adrenaline rush and the fact that no two days are ever the same was certainly a factor as well.

What has been the most memorable moment on the job?

One thing that is great about this career is the opportunity to make memories everyday.  (On and off shift).   There are many stories I could share, some great and some not so great.  The opportunity to help the community as well as my brothers and sisters on the job certainly stands out.

What do you do outside of work?

I am an avid hunter and outdoorsman.  I enjoy nature and try to take advantage of its beauty whenever possible.  I also serve the Waukesha Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 407 as the Vice President, The Village of North Prairie as a trustee, I work part time as a journeyman plumber, and attend as many of my children’s extracurricular activities as possible.

What do you wish the general population knew about your job?

One little silly misconception I think that the general population may have, is that “they” pay for our meals while we are on duty.  In fact, in our station, we have to pay each shift as a crew for our meals.  Meal time is an important part of bonding in our line of work.  Not only do we pay for our meals, we also spend time together in the kitchen cooking and cleaning together.  A common quote in the firehouse is, “we eat as a family”

.

Favorite Quote(s) or motto you live by?

“Poor leadership is building a great team and doing everything in your power to hold onto control.  It makes no sense to recruit the best people and tie their hands by not giving them the freedom to perform."

I also live by the quote: “life is too short to not have fun.”  As my wife and I always say: “Work hard, Play Hard, Love even harder.”
